Basketball Gimbal vs Dedicated Tracking Mount

Is a gimbal bad for filming basketball? Yes, for recording games. A phone gimbal is a handheld stabiliser: its three motors cancel hand shake, and its built-in tracking follows one person you select. Courtside, the tripod has already removed the shake, and the game is never one player. A dedicated tracking mount is built for the job: it stands at halfway on a tripod, turns with the play and is set up for basketball. Why a gimbal fails courtside

• Turnovers. Play reverses in a second and the ball moves faster than any player. Tracking that follows one selected player shows that player, not necessarily the play.
• Crowded keys. Rebounds and drives stack bodies together, and a tracker holding onto one person has to pick them out of the pile. Framing the game is about the play, not one jersey.
• No ball. DJI says the Osmo Mobile 7P's tracking module "only supports tracking human subjects".
• No courtside height. A gimbal's built-in stand is a tabletop accessory: DJI lists its own at 67 mm. Courtside you need a tripod of about 1.8 m at halfway, and a head designed to live on it.
• Wide-angle clearance. DJI notes that with some phones' wide-angle lenses, part of the gimbal can appear in the camera view.

Indoor or outdoor, full court or half court

Basketball isn't only played in a stadium. Where a gimbal is the right buy

Buy a gimbal if you want to walk the sideline yourself, film your child's warm-up up close, or shoot vlogs and travel. Gimbals are very good at following one person when you are holding the camera. Just don't ask one to be your game camera.

Before choosing, ask for the whole possession

Ask any camera seller for uncut footage from a gym like yours. Watch a fast break in each direction, a crowded rebound, a near-side drive and a stoppage followed by a restart. Check how much play stays in frame and whether anyone had to touch the camera. A highlight reel can't answer those questions.
