Football tracking camera guide
American football plays on a rectangular field with structured stoppages. AFL moves across a much larger oval with long kicks and aerial contests. The right automatic camera depends on which football you mean.

The short answer: Trackd is a strong low-cost option for American football and smaller junior grounds when a portable sideline setup is the priority. Hudl Focus and Veo make more sense for programmes that need a permanent camera and shared analysis platform. Full-size AFL remains the hardest use case for any consumer phone mount because the oval can be 135 to 185 metres long.
Code-specific comparison
| System | Starting price | Installation | Tracking approach | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trackd | US$199 | Portable tripod + iPhone | Physical pan-tilt using on-device ball and player context | Families, schools and grassroots teams |
| XbotGo Chameleon | US$349.99 | Portable tripod + phone | Ball + jersey-number detection | Portable teams that need Android support |
| Veo Cam 3 | US$1,299 | Elevated dedicated camera | Digital crop of a wide-angle sensor (no physical pan-tilt) | Clubs using Veo's shared analysis platform |
| Hudl Focus | US$4,000 | Permanent wall or venue install | Virtual operator (panoramic capture + digital crop) | US school programmes already using Hudl |
Reference prices exclude some tripods, phones, installation, platform plans, tax and shipping. AFL performance varies materially with oval size and camera elevation.
Start with the football code
American football
A rectangular field, repeated line-of-scrimmage resets and predictable possession changes suit elevated sideline or end-zone filming.
Junior AFL
Modified junior grounds are friendlier to portable tracking mounts because long kicks cover less distance and the action stays closer.
Senior AFL
A 135–185 metre oval, fast switches and high kicks demand a wide view, strong elevation and more conservative framing than a soccer or gridiron setup.
American football
American football gives an automatic camera regular opportunities to settle: huddles, line-of-scrimmage resets, kickoffs and dead-ball periods. A halfway-line sideline position can capture useful team film when the camera starts wide enough to hold receivers and deep plays.
Australian football
AFL is difficult for every consumer tracking camera. The field is larger, the ball spends more time in the air, and one kick can move play farther than a phone sensor can resolve cleanly from the opposite side.
Trackd does not currently ship a dedicated AFL preset. General sport mode can produce useful footage on junior and modified grounds, but a permanent high multi-lens system will outperform a phone mount on a full-size senior oval. That limitation should be part of the buying decision.
Setup matters
For both codes, the camera sees the game better when it is elevated and slightly wider. Aggressive zoom makes automatic framing look exciting in a demo but increases the chance of losing a deep pass, long kick or rapid switch.

Common questions
For families and grassroots teams that want a portable setup, Trackd starts at US$199 and uses a motorised iPhone mount without a required subscription. Hudl Focus or Veo can be better for organisations that need a permanent venue camera and shared analysis platform.
Yes. The rectangular field and structured stoppages make American football suitable for automatic filming. Use a wide preset and test long passes, punts and kickoffs so the camera does not frame too tightly.
Trackd can record AFL in general sport mode, especially on smaller junior grounds, but a dedicated AFL preset has not shipped. Full-size senior ovals are a demanding use case for every consumer phone mount.
AFL ovals are much larger than soccer or American-football fields, the ball travels long distances in the air, and play can switch direction rapidly. Cameras need more elevation and wider framing to avoid losing action.
Trackd and XbotGo Chameleon do not require a core subscription. Veo and Hudl are built around paid team platforms. Compare the workflow and three-year cost, not only the hardware price.
Start near the centre line at the highest safe stable position available. Use a wider view for American football routes and full-size AFL, and keep the sun behind the camera where possible.
