How to Film a Basketball Game: Camera Position and Settings

Basketball is difficult to film because possession changes instantly and the court is compact. A tight zoom may look exciting for one drive but lose the outlet pass, weak-side spacing and defensive transition that coaches need.

Venue rules come first. Never place a tripod in the run-off, block a spectator aisle or attach equipment to the basket structure. Ask the venue or competition for the approved recording location.

Best position by venue

Phone and camera checklist

• Clean the lens and disable distracting notifications.
• Confirm frame rate, resolution and available storage.
• Test for flicker or exposure pulsing under the gym lights.
• Frame the near sideline and corners without excessive empty ceiling.
• Allow battery capacity for warm-up, regulation and overtime.
• Record a short test and inspect player size before the opening tip.

Framing for coaching review

Keep the weak side visible. Coaches need to see help defenders, off-ball screens, spacing and who runs back after a shot. Follow the developing play rather than the ball alone, leaving room in front of a fast break.

For individual clips, crop or zoom after recording where image quality allows. A wide master recording preserves options that a tight live pan permanently removes.

Tripod height

Extra height can reveal spacing behind nearby players, but there is no single height that fixes every venue. The safe position, tripod stability, lens and recording mode all matter. Use the height specified for your mode; do not extend equipment beyond its rating or create an unstable footprint to gain a better angle.

The released Trackd Basketball Broadcast View guide specifies a 183 cm tripod at halfway, in landscape orientation, with calibration on the mounted iPhone using both hoops and all four corners. Tight gyms, spectators and camera clearance

• Check the view through the mounted phone from the actual recording spot. A clear view can disappear when substitutes stand or spectators sit in front of the tripod.
• Watch warm-up movement into each near-side corner and towards both baskets. Confirm the lens is clear and the rig can turn far enough from this position.
• Inspect a short saved recording to judge whether far-side players are large enough for your review needs; the live preview alone is not enough.
• Allow cable slack for camera movement without pulling on the phone. Keep cables and tripod feet out of traffic and court run-off.
• If the view is repeatedly blocked, move to a clearer approved position. Tracking software cannot recover action the phone never sees.

Filming hands-free with Trackd

• Place the tripod beside the side line at halfway, outside the run-off and walkways.
• Attach the mount and iPhone with the tripod lowered, then raise it and lock every section.

• Record a warm-up sample in both directions and into the near corners. Check playback for framing, obstructions and light flicker; fix the position and repeat if it is not usable.

• Confirm storage and power for warm-up, breaks and overtime. After moving the tripod or phone, repeat the chosen mode's setup and recording check.
