Basketball uses a stop clock, so 40 or 48 minutes of playing time does not equal 40 or 48 minutes in the venue. Fouls, free throws, time-outs, substitutions, reviews and quarter breaks extend the event.
The governing rules matter when planning transport, venue hire or recording capacity. Youth leagues can shorten periods further and may use a running clock for parts of the game.
Regulation time by competition

| NBA | 4 × 12 minutes (48 total) | 5 minutes |
| FIBA | 4 × 10 minutes (40 total) | 5 minutes |
| NCAA men | 2 × 20 minutes (40 total) | 5 minutes |
| NCAA women | 4 × 10 minutes (40 total) | 5 minutes |

How long should you allow in real time?
A senior game commonly occupies roughly 90 minutes to more than two hours, depending on the level, time-out rules, media breaks and number of stoppages. Televised NBA games are usually at the longer end. A close finish with fouls and reviews can add considerable time to the final minute of game clock.
If you are filming, begin with a fully charged phone and enough storage for warm-ups, regulation and possible overtime. Do not size the recording only to the official playing minutes.
What stops the clock?
- An official's whistle for a foul or violation.
- Time-outs and certain substitutions.
- The ball becoming dead under the competition's timing rules.
- Official review or equipment problems.
- The end of each period; overtime is added when the score is tied.
