Soccer positions are flexible. A formation is the team's starting structure when organised, not a set of lanes that players can never leave. Full-backs overlap, forwards press, midfielders drop between defenders and wingers often move inside.
Traditional shirt numbers became shorthand for roles, but the number printed on a modern player's jersey does not have to match the position. A player wearing 47 can still operate as the team's number 10.

What do CAM, CDM and number 9 mean?
CAM means central attacking midfielder. This player usually receives between the opposition's midfield and defensive lines, combines with forwards and creates chances. CDM means central defensive midfielder: a deeper role focused on protecting central space, recovering the ball and moving possession forward.
The number 9 is the central striker role. Some number 9s stay high and finish chances; others drop into midfield as a false 9. The number 10 is traditionally the main creator, while the number 8 is a central or box-to-box midfielder.
How formations change the job
In a 4-3-3, the front three usually include two wide forwards and a central striker. A 4-2-3-1 adds a dedicated attacking midfielder behind the striker. A 3-5-2 often gives wing-backs responsibility for the entire flank. The label matters less than the player's responsibilities in and out of possession.

Frequently asked questions
What is the hardest soccer position?
There is no objective hardest position. Goalkeeper has unique technical pressure, central midfield demands constant scanning, and striker carries finishing pressure.
Is CAM the same as number 10?
Often, but not always. CAM is a positional label; number 10 is a traditional creative role that can be interpreted differently by each team.
What is a false 9?
A false 9 starts as the central forward but drops into deeper spaces to connect play and draw defenders out.
