The familiar answer is 11, but that describes the players taking part at one time—not the full match-day squad or club roster. Competitions decide how many substitutes may be named, and youth competitions often use smaller team formats.
Each side must identify one goalkeeper. The other ten players can be arranged in any legal formation, which is why a team sheet may list defenders, midfielders and forwards in different combinations.

What happens after a red card?
A player sent off cannot be replaced, so the team continues with one fewer player. A side can therefore play with ten, nine, eight or seven. If it falls below seven, the match cannot continue. Competition authorities decide what happens to the result afterward.
Temporary absences do not always reduce the official team count in the same way. For example, a player receiving treatment may leave briefly and return with the referee's permission.
Youth and small-sided team sizes
Junior programs commonly progress from 4v4 to 7v7, 9v9 and finally 11v11. Smaller teams create more touches, decisions and one-on-one moments for each child. Formats vary by age and association, so the local competition rules are the source of truth.
