Rotation positions and playing roles are related but not identical. A setter may begin the rally in a back-row rotation spot, then move quickly toward the net to run the offence after the serve.
The six numbered court zones run clockwise: right back (1), right front (2), middle front (3), left front (4), left back (5) and middle back (6). The server occupies position 1.
Specialist roles
| Role | Primary job | Common movement |
|---|---|---|
| Setter | Choose and deliver the attack | Moves to the setting zone after service |
| Outside hitter | Receive, attack left side and defend | Plays through front and back row |
| Opposite | Attack right side and block the outside | Balances setter and primary scorers |
| Middle blocker | Quick attacks and blocking across the net | Transitions laterally along front row |
| Libero | Back-row reception and defence | Replaces eligible back-row players under special rules |
| Defensive specialist | Serve receive and floor defence | Substitutes into back-row situations |
How clockwise rotation works
A team rotates only when it wins a rally while receiving and therefore gains the serve. Each player moves one zone clockwise. The player arriving in position 1 serves. Before the serve, the team must preserve the correct relative order; after contact, players may move to their system positions.
Front-row players occupy positions 2, 3 and 4. Back-row players occupy 1, 6 and 5 and face restrictions on blocking and attacking a ball above the net when taking off from the front zone.
Basic indoor scoring
A standard match is best of five sets. The first four sets are played to 25 points and a deciding fifth set to 15, with a two-point winning margin and no fixed ceiling. A team may contact the ball up to three times to return it, in addition to a block contact under the rules.
- Call the rotation before every serve during development games.
- Separate serve-receive formation from the players' official rotational order.
- Review the whole court on film to see coverage gaps behind the block.
- Check current competition rules because 2026 events may be testing specific amendments.
