Position names describe structure, not fixed lanes. A defenceman may lead the rush, a winger may cover low in the defensive zone and the centre often supports both sides of the puck.
Coaches rotate three-player forward lines and two-player defensive pairs. The best units change together, communicate coverage and recognise when a teammate has moved out of the usual slot.
The six on-ice roles
| Position | Starting area | Core responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Centre | Middle of forward line | Support low, take face-offs and connect all zones |
| Left wing | Left side | Pressure, create width and attack scoring space |
| Right wing | Right side | Pressure, create width and attack scoring space |
| Left defence | Left side of blue line / defensive pair | Defend entries and move the puck |
| Right defence | Right side of pair | Protect the middle and support offence |
| Goalkeeper | Crease | Stop shots, control rebounds and communicate |
Roles change with possession
In the offensive zone, forwards create pressure below the goal line and attack the slot while defencemen hold the blue line. In the defensive zone, the unit protects dangerous central space and tries to exit with control. During transition, the closest player may need to perform a teammate's usual job until shape is restored.
Reviewing position on video
- Freeze the frame when possession changes and identify the first three support options.
- Check the distance between the defensive pair before an entry.
- Review whether the weak-side winger protected the middle or left early.
- Track line changes that create tired shifts or uncovered attackers.

Frequently asked questions
What is the hardest hockey position?
There is no objective answer. Goalkeeper is uniquely specialised; centre has broad two-way responsibility; every role has elite technical and tactical demands.
Do hockey players stay in one position?
They keep role responsibilities but rotate and cover for teammates as play changes.
What is a defensive pair?
It is the two defencemen deployed together as a unit, often changed on a different rotation from the forwards.
