Soccer uses a running clock, but the referee adds time for delays such as substitutions, injuries, disciplinary action, goal celebrations and video reviews. The board shown near the end of a half indicates the minimum additional time, not a guaranteed final whistle time.
Knockout matches may also need extra time and a penalty shoot-out. League matches usually end as a draw after regulation, depending on the competition rules.
Match length by format
| Format | Playing time | Typical extra elements |
|---|---|---|
| Standard senior match | 2 × 45 minutes | Up to 15-minute half-time plus stoppage time |
| Extra time | 2 × 15 minutes | Short interval between periods; stoppage time can be added |
| Penalty shoot-out | No fixed duration | Used only when competition rules require a winner |
| Youth match | Competition-specific | Shorter halves and modified breaks are common |
Why 90 minutes often takes nearly two hours
The match clock does not stop every time the ball goes out. Instead, the referee accounts for significant lost time at the end of each half. Add the half-time interval, pre-kickoff formalities and a few minutes of stoppage time, and a 90-minute match commonly occupies close to two hours from kickoff to final whistle.
For filming, plan battery and storage for the real event rather than only the regulation clock. A knockout fixture can run well beyond two hours once extra time and penalties are included.
How youth match times differ
Youth competitions shorten matches to suit player development and welfare. There is no global age-by-age timetable in the senior Laws. Check the relevant association handbook because half lengths, breaks, interchange rules and field sizes can all change together.
