Netball is played on a rectangular court that is level and firm. World Netball prefers a wooden, preferably sprung, surface but allows other materials when they are safe to play on, which is why club netball happens on everything from sprung timber to outdoor asphalt.
Every line is 50 mm wide and belongs to the area it outlines. A line shared by two areas, such as a transverse line, is part of both. That detail matters for offside calls and for anyone reviewing footage of a player landing on a line.

Thirds, circles and the court surround
Two transverse lines run parallel to the goal lines and divide the court into three equal areas: a goal third at each end and the centre third in the middle. Each goal circle is measured from the midpoint of the outside of the goal line, so the circle reaches 4.9 m into the goal third.
The court surround extends 3.05 m beyond the side lines and goal lines. Together the court and surround make up the field of play, and during play only on-court players and umpires may be inside it. Team benches and the official bench sit on one side in the bench zone next to the field of play.
Many community venues cannot provide the full 3.05 m, especially where courts sit side by side in a multi-court hall. Check the venue's own layout before deciding where spectators, benches or a camera tripod can stand.

Ball size, plus junior post heights
The standard netball (size 5) has a circumference of 690–710 mm and weighs 400–450 g. Netball Australia's NetSetGO program modifies equipment for younger players, as shown below from its August 2026 modified rules fact sheet. Your association may run its own junior variations, so confirm locally.
| Level | Goalpost height | Ball | Match length |
|---|---|---|---|
| NetSetGO Set tier | 2.4 m | Size 4 | 4 × 8-minute quarters |
| NetSetGO Go tier | 2.4 m – 3.05 m | Size 4 | 4 × 10-minute quarters |
| Netball | 3.05 m | Size 5 | 4 × 15-minute quarters |
Filming a netball court
At 30.5 m long, a whole netball court fits comfortably in one wide camera view from the side line, but the far goal circle looks small if the camera sits too low or too far towards one end. A camera level with the centre third keeps both goal circles at similar sizes, which is why it is the default position in our netball recording guide.
Keep any tripod outside the court surround, clear of the bench zone and out of walkways. In multi-court halls, the surround of one court is often the walkway of the next.
