Goaltending vs Basket Interference in Basketball

The rules protect a shot once it reaches specified parts of its flight and the space above the ring. A spectacular late block can therefore be illegal even when the defender touches only the ball.

NBA and FIBA terminology and permitted touches are not identical. In particular, how a ball may be played around the cylinder after contacting the ring differs between rule sets, so broadcast habits should not replace the actual competition rules.

Situations officials evaluate

• Was the ball a field-goal attempt with a chance to score?
• Was it on its downward flight toward the basket?
• Had it touched the backboard above ring level?
• Was any part of the ball within the imaginary cylinder above the rim?
• Did a player touch the rim, net or basket in a prohibited way?

Defensive and offensive outcomes

Defensive goaltending normally awards the appropriate value of the attempted shot. Offensive goaltending or interference normally cancels the basket and gives the opponents possession. The exact restart and statistical treatment follow the competition rulebook.

A legal block must occur before the shot receives protected status. Timing, ball trajectory and relation to the backboard or ring matter more than how hard the defender jumps.

Using video to understand the call

Use a sideline or elevated angle that shows both the flight and rim. A view directly behind the play can hide whether the ball was descending. Review at normal speed first, then step through the frames around backboard contact and the defender's touch.
