The term describes a statistical achievement, not a rule or a type of score. A player with 18 points and 11 rebounds has a double-double; a player with 30 points and nine assists does not.
Because points, rebounds and assists occur more often than steals or blocks, most double-doubles use two of those first three categories.
Double-double combinations
| Example line | Result | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 22 points, 13 rebounds | Double-double | Double figures in points and rebounds |
| 12 points, 10 assists | Double-double | Double figures in points and assists |
| 10 rebounds, 11 assists | Double-double | Scoring is not required |
| 28 points, 9 rebounds, 9 assists | No double-double | Only one category reached 10 |
| 14 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists | Triple-double | Three categories reached 10 |
Double-double vs triple-double
A triple-double requires double figures in three categories. A quadruple-double requires four and is exceptionally rare. The thresholds do not change with game length, so comparisons between leagues and eras should consider pace, minutes and statistical definitions.
What the stat does—and does not—tell you
A double-double can show broad contribution, but it does not automatically mean the player had a good game. Shooting efficiency, turnovers, defence, decision-making and the game context still matter. Video helps connect the totals to how the actions occurred.

Frequently asked questions
Do turnovers count toward a double-double?
No. The recognised positive categories are points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks.
Can you get a double-double without scoring 10 points?
Yes. For example, 10 rebounds and 10 assists qualify even with fewer than 10 points.
Is 20 points a double-double by itself?
No. The player needs double figures in a second statistical category.
