The numbers describe the starting shell, not where defenders stand for an entire possession. Every pass, cut, screen and drive changes the shape. A successful zone moves on the flight of the ball and communicates responsibility before an attacker receives.
Neither zone is universally better. The choice depends on opponent shooting, post threats, rebounding matchups, your team's length and how much practice time is available.
Shape comparison
| Feature | 2–3 zone | 3–2 zone |
|---|---|---|
| Initial top line | Two guards | Three perimeter defenders |
| Initial baseline line | Two wings plus middle | Two baseline defenders |
| Natural strength | Paint and baseline coverage | Top and wing perimeter pressure |
| Common stress point | High post and quick ball reversal | Corners, short corner and low-post overload |
| Rebounding issue | Must find players from areas | Weak-side box-out and baseline coverage |
Core rotation principles
- Move while the pass travels, not after the catch.
- Protect the middle before chasing low-value space.
- Communicate cutters as they cross responsibility areas.
- Cover the basket when a baseline defender closes to the corner.
- Finish the possession by locating and boxing out an opponent.
What to tag in game footage
Tag every paint touch, corner catch, offensive rebound and uncontested three. Then review the pass immediately before the breakdown. The visible scoring action is often caused by a late first rotation or two defenders taking the same receiver.
Use a wide elevated angle. Tight ball-following footage can hide the weak side, which is precisely where zone rotations and rebounding responsibilities often fail.

Frequently asked questions
Which zone is better against three-point shooting?
A 3–2 can apply more natural pressure to the top and wings, but corner coverage remains demanding. Personnel and rotations matter more than the label alone.
Is a 2–3 zone easier to learn?
It is a common introductory shell, but defending cutters, high-post catches, corners and rebounds still requires coordinated practice.
Can junior teams play zone defence?
Some youth competitions restrict or discourage zone defence for development reasons. Check the local rules.
